Anchorage Parks Tour/Relay 1998 Results Once again the Anchorage Parks Tour competitors had a beautiful day to orienteer over 4 parks. Starting in back of the Northest Community Center on Muldoon road, the courses went from Pia-Margrethe through Far North Bicentennial park, across the new Tudor Rd bridge into APU/UAA and finished with a picnic and barbeque at Russian Jack Springs. Contestants had 1:15 to discover controls on the first map, followed by 3:00, 1:00 and :45 minutes for a total of 6 hours across the entire course. Teams and soloists had 15 minutes between each map to look at the course on the next map, take in more food and drink, change clothing (and partners) and commiserate on previous course route choices. Course organizers provided refreshments, supplied transportation and other logistics. High point soloists and teams covered as much as 40 kilometers using trails, roads, streams, and other cross country features. A number of non-orienteers joined in for a long distance training run since a number of the controls were placed specifically for easier access. Paul Denkewalter, competing as a soloist for the first time, was moved while traversing the first map which was named in memory for his daughter who died in a climbing accident two years ago. He donated drawing prizes for the final awards banquet. Although there has been much attention given to bear sightings this year, there were no "close encounters". During the last couple of orienteering events at Pia Margarethe and Bicentennial, course setters and competitors have traveled extensively through the parks and have seen a a total of three or four bears fleeing at their approach. Kimball Forrest was again the first place soloist winner. He went slower, which improved his accuracy, and reported that the addition of water controls aided his endurance. A couple of competitors started at the transition zones for APU/UAA and Russian Jack thus bypassing the first two maps and minimizing their total possible points. Many favorable comments were expressed - generally while downing fish and pasta at Russian Jack. It was announced that the July 25th 12/24 hour ROGAINE location has been moved from Peters Hills to the Denali Highway near Tangle Lakes.
