Jim's Jump-up training May 29, 2002 Far North Bicentennial Park Klutina Dr entry Beginner/advanced beginner (white-yellow) Level: I will have a white level course with some optional yellow level controls. You can time yourself if you wish to see how your speed compares with others, but it may be better to take your time and work on map reading and trying off trail routes. There will probably be people to help get you started if you have never done it before. You can also try the pace counting course I plan to set up Intermediate (those wishing to go from yellow to orange): This is perhaps the hardest jump to make. I will have a list of skills you should know and be learning at this level you can check yourself against. You can practice pacing on the pacing course, then get with a small group of your approximate ability and head out with an instructor for field practice. Advanced (aspiring to red/green level) Similar to last year, I will ask experienced orienteerers to take you out in small groups for hand's on help and practice. Emphasis should be on reading the terrain and getting around without large or obvious features. Do some pace counting practice if you need it, but remember pace counting and even the compass are backups to matching map and terrain. ********* Note: for the intermediate and advanced training, we will run/walk about 1.2K south along the power line and cross the North Fork of Campbell Creek to get to the good terrain, so expect to get your feet wet. *************
