Jeff's Mountain-O sponsored by the Arctic Orienteering Club

When:

Saturday, 7/13/02. Starts are from 9:30 - 11:00 am at 2 minute intervals. All competitors must finish by 9 PM.

Where:

This year's mountain orienteering meet will start and finish on the Power line Pass Trail near the base of Ptarmigan Pk.
This is nearly an hour walk from the Glenn Alps parking lot. You may cut this time by running or mountain biking to the start.
If you need more detailed directions to Glenn Alps and the start area, click here.

What & Why:

The format will be a standard point-to-point orienteering meet with controls to be done in order. This is a rigorous event and requires basic back country skills and good conditioning, especially for the two more advanced courses. The rewards for your efforts will be a chance to experience some of the finest mountain trekking anywhere, (right in our backyard!) and test your skills and stamina against (or at least rub elbows with) some of the finest mountain trekkers anywhere.

How:

  • teams or individuals allowed
  • survival gear required (click here for a recommended list)
  • 10 minute penalty for changing course objective ( blue <-->red) during competition.
  • 5 minute penalty for failure to sign in at remote checkpoint (control)
  • The Map:

The entire course is on the southwest portion of the Anchorage A-7 quad map.  The map will be oriented to TRUE north with magnetic north lines drawn based on a declination of approx. 26* East. [note: the actual declination is approx 22* E] The map has been updated with some additional trails and is reproduced enlarged and in color for easy reading.

Large features should make locating controls the easy part of this meet (unless there is fog).  Almost all controls are lakes, peaks, or saddles.

    The Courses:

Blue  - Approx. 13 miles.  6,500 feet elevation climb.  13 controls.
Three sustained climbs approximately 1,000 ft each.
I walked this route in about 9 hours.

Red -   Approx.  9 miles.  4,500 feet elevation climb.   9 controls.
Two sustained climbs approximately 1,000 ft each.

Green - Approx. 6 miles.  1,500 feet elevation climb.  6 controls.
One sustained climb of  600 ft.

Blue & Red courses will share a common map & control card to accommodate any change in plans.
