Gunnar's
Fun
Family Birthday-O and O-Potluck
This week’s orienteering event (Wednesday, June 25) will be a fun “Birthday-O,”
which is similar to a regular Score-O race except for certain
extra features. The event will use the APU/UAA map. You have a choice of a
45-minute event or a 1-hour event. There will be “easy,” “intermediate,” and
“advanced” controls.
The event will start at the home of Gunnar and Alice Knapp, at Iditarod Trail
Mile 4, on the eastern edge of University Lake park and the APU/UAA orienteering
map (the more conventional address is 3730 Wesleyan Drive).
Meet at the Knapp home at 6:00. There will be a mass start at 6:30, with another
start at 7:00 for those who need more time to finish reading the
lengthy Birthday-O instructions (or you can start anytime you wish and time
yourself).
After the race there will be a potluck dinner in the Knapps’ back yard (or
indoors if it is raining). Bring something to eat or drink to share, salads and
desserts would be great. If you forget, don’t worry—there will be plenty
of hotdogs. Bring a
bathing suit and towel if you want to relax in the hot-tub.

Directions to the Knapp Home:
From midtown, take Northern Lights east towards the mountains. Continue past
Lake Otis and Bragaw Street. At the next traffic light after Bragaw,
turn right (south) on Wesleyan Drive. Drive 0.6 mile to 3730 Wesleyan Drive. The
Knapp home is on the right. There is a flagpole with an American flag at the end
of the driveway, and also the name Knapp and the number 3730.
From Tudor Road, turn north on Checkmate Drive just west of the Alaska Club.
Follow Checkmate about .5 mile north to the bottom of a gradual hill. At the
stop sign, turn left on Wesleyan. Follow Wesleyan about .5 miles around a long
curve to 3730 Wesleyan Drive on the left. There is a flagpole with an American
flag at the end of the driveway (the second house with a flagpole, coming this
direction), and also the name Knapp and the number 3730.
If you prefer to park at the APU Mosely Sports Center, it is a short walk to the
Knapp house. Walk down to the APU playing fields. At the southeast
corner of the fields, follow the trail part way around the east end of the lake,
and then cut through the woods on a smaller trail leading directly to the Knapp
home. There will be orienteering controls to show the way from the southeast
corner of the APU playing fields.
